Get to know us

Founded in 1999, Special Olympics Malaysia is a nonprofit organization registered with Sports Commission of Malaysia under Akta Perbangunan Sukan 1997 Peraturan-peraturan Pembangunan Sukan (Pemdaftaran Badan Sukan) 1998 (Perauran 6) and is accredited by Special Olympics International as the National Program for Malaysia.

Through accredited state program, we reach out to all states and their respective local communities and working with other NGOs, Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Kuminities (PDK), Schools and governmental agencies to engage communities for people with intellectual disabilities (ID).

We aim to serve Intellectual Disabilities communities through programming in sports, health, education and community building, Special Olympics is tackling the inactivity, stigma, isolation, and injustice that people with intellectual disabilities face.

Tapping on the global resources extended by Special Olympics, we provide high- quality training and competition in an inclusive culture through Unified Sports which allows for people with and without intellectual disabilities to play on the same field.

Our Mission

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics History

It all began in the 1950s and early 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver saw how unjustly and unfairly people with intellectual disabilities were treated. She also saw that many children with intellectual disabilities didn’t even have a place to play. She decided to take action. You can read more about the history of Special Olympics Movement.
