What started with a game of bowling has grown into a meaningful connection between Baker Hughes employees in Malaysia and the Special Olympics community.
The story began through the involvement of the employees from Baker Hughes Malaysia had the opportunity to spend time with Special Olympics Malaysia athletes through a bowling activity. Beyond the sporting experience, the engagement gave employees the chance to interact with the athletes, get to know them and experience first-hand the joy, determination and enthusiasm they bring to every activity.
The connection continued into 2026 through the Baker Hughes Walk-a-thon, where employees once again came together with the Special Olympics Malaysia community. As part of the initiative, participants brought an athlete along, creating another opportunity for employees and athletes to spend time together while promoting an active and inclusive community.
For Special Olympics Malaysia, these engagements were more than individual activities. Each interaction helped build familiarity and understanding between the Baker Hughes team and our athletes, while giving employees an opportunity to see the impact of inclusion through shared experiences. This growing relationship eventually led to The Baker Hughes Foundation making a donation to Special Olympics Malaysia, supporting the organisation’s continued work to provide sports, health and leadership opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities across Malaysia.
The donation reflects how meaningful partnerships can develop through genuine engagement. Rather than beginning with a single fundraising initiative, the relationship was built gradually—through bowling, walking and spending time together. For the athletes, these opportunities provide more than a chance to participate in sport. They create opportunities to meet new people, form friendships and be recognised for their abilities. For the Baker Hughes employees, the experiences provided a closer connection to the Special Olympics movement and a better understanding of the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.
