Inclusion in Motion: The SOM & Baker Hughes Unified Walkathon

On July 17th, Special Olympics Malaysia joined hands with Baker Hughes for a Unified Walkathon that brought community and corporate partnership to life in the most energetic way possible. The event brought together up to 100 Baker Hughes employees and 23 Special Olympics Malaysia athletes, proving that incredible things happen when we move, play, and connect as one team.

More Than a Walk: 2.8 KM of Connection and Teamwork

This wasn’t just a step-count challenge; it was an experience rooted in shared purpose. Over a 2.8 KM course, participants stepped side-by-side, sharing stories, laughter, and encouragement along the way. To make the journey even more engaging, the route featured 5 team-building station games strategically designed to bring everyone together. Every game required total collaboration, creative problem-solving, and mutual support across all abilities. Whether navigating an obstacle or working together to score points, success depended on every single team member contributing their unique strengths.

Choose to Include, Play Unified: Celebrating Inclusion Through Futsal

On 11 July 2026, Special Olympics Malaysia brought together athletes, Unified Partners, volunteers, and supporters for an inspiring Inclusive Futsal Event, where the true spirit of inclusion was on full display.

The event showcased the power of Unified Sports®, a Special Olympics initiative that brings together individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete as teammates. More than just a game of futsal, the event demonstrated how sport can break down barriers, build meaningful friendships, and foster mutual respect both on and off the court.

Throughout the day, participants competed with enthusiasm, encouraged one another, and celebrated every goal, save, and successful pass. The matches reflected what Unified Sports® is all about—creating opportunities where everyone belongs and every individual is valued for their unique strengths.

Events like the Inclusive Futsal Event remind us that inclusion is not simply an idea—it is something we actively choose through our actions, our attitudes, and our willingness to create opportunities for everyone to participate. Every pass, every cheer, and every shared victory on the court reinforced the message that differences should never be barriers to belonging.

Play Together, Win Together: Special Olympics Malaysia Unified Basketball Games

An incredible day of unity, teamwork, and inclusion

On 14 March 2026, Special Olympics Malaysia brought the spirit of inclusion to life with a Unified 3x3 Basketball Friendly Match held at Elevate Sports Performance Basketball Court. The court became more than just a place for competition—it was a space where athletes and unified partners came together to share in a meaningful, energetic, and truly uplifting experience.

The day was filled with moments that went beyond the game itself. Athletes and partners played side by side, encouraging one another, celebrating every basket, and building genuine connections. What stood out most was not just the teamwork on the scoreboard, but the friendships forming with every pass and play.

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support from our volunteers. A special appreciation goes out to the Leo & Lions Clubs, along with students from Sunway University, who stepped in as unified partners. Their willingness to engage, support, and connect with the athletes truly embodied the spirit of inclusion—proving that sport has the power to bring people together regardless of ability.

We are also deeply grateful to Lions Clubs International Foundation for their generous support in making this event a reality. Their contribution continues to enable impactful initiatives that foster inclusivity and community engagement.

As the final whistle blew, it was clear that the impact of the day extended far beyond the court. Through events like these, we are reminded that inclusion is not just an idea—it is something we build together, one game at a time.

SO Kedah: Athletics and Unified Sports Carnival 2026

Pathway to the National Games 2026

The Athletics and Unified Sports Carnival, organised by Special Olympics Kedah, was successfully held on 7 February 2026 at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Sports Complex. Beyond being a celebration of inclusive sports, the carnival played an important role as a selection event for athletes representing Kedah at the National Games 2026.

The carnival was organised with the objective of promoting inclusive sports participation, strengthening social integration, and competitive readiness of athletes with intellectual disabilities. As part of the National Games selection process, the event provided athletes with a competitive environment to demonstrate their skills and sport readiness.

Sport events included Athletics, Bocce Unified, and Football 5-a-side Unified. All competitions were conducted smoothly, with strong participation from athletes, unified partners, technical officials, and volunteers. Performance, teamwork, and sportsmanship observed throughout the day contributed to the evaluation process for athlete selection.

The carnival concluded with a Closing Ceremony, jointly officiated by En Abdul Rahim Bin Mat, Director of Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Kedah (Kedah State Education Department), and Dr. Nasiruddin Bin Haron, Director of the UUM Sports Centre. Their presence highlighted the strong collaboration between the education ministry and higher education institutions in supporting inclusive sports pathways, including athlete development and progression to national-level competitions.

Overall, the Athletics and Unified Sports Carnival served as SO Kedah’s preparation for the National Games 2026. In addition to identifying potential athletes for state representation, the event strengthened partnerships, enhanced athlete confidence, and reaffirmed Special Olympics Kedah’s commitment to creating inclusive and sustainable sporting opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Malaysia celebrates Special Olympics founder's day with state and local programs

Every September, the Special Olympics Movement celebrates the ideals of the Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver with an annual "EKS Day."In Malaysia itself, state programs like Special Olympics Selangor (SOS) and a district program with Special Olympics Sandakan, Sabah celebrated EKS Day with meaningful unified activities that builds closer ties between family members, members of the Special Olympics community, as well as members of the public.

SOS organised a bowling and bocce activity over the weekend for special athletes and their family members. Twenty unified teams of intellectually disabled (ID) and non ID persons took part in bowling, while another 28 unified teams played bocce the next day. There were a total of 20 unified bowling teams taking part, individuals with different capabilities, and neuro-diverse abilities coming together to play together and learn teamwork ad well as how to celebrate victories and accept setbacks.

Later national bowlers Timmy Tan and Siti Safiyah, the ambassadors appointed by SO Selangor, also came to join in the fun and handout medals to the winning teams.

Mean while SMK Muhibbah, a secondary school in Sandakan, Sabah had a camping activity within their school compound, where the athletes learnt how to set up camping tents, and also held dance performances of various cultures, including the Malay, Chinese, and Kadazan cultures.

Special Olympics Sarawak is promoting Social Inclusion through Unified Sports

Special Olympics Sarawak through Sibu Chapter is working closely with school to create a unified generation through Unified Sport.

Special Olympics Sarawak started in 1998. Today our number of athletes has grown to over 1,000 and sports activities include athletics, soccer, floor hockey, swimming, bowling, bocce, and badminton. Many of our athletes are students from the special education integration program in their respective schools. In view of the current best practices in supporting pupils with intellectual disabilities is shifting to inclusion, Special Olympics Sarawak, Sibu Chapter has been working closely with these schools to train students with and without intellectual disabilities to play unified sports in recent years.

“We believe by working closely with the schools, we are able to create a unified generation that chooses to include.” said Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai (Vice-chairman of Special Olympics Sarawak and Chairman of Special Olympics Sarawak Sibu Chapter) at the handing over ceremony today where 20 sets of badminton racket and 15 sets of shuttlecocks provided to Education Department Sibu. These sports items will be distributed to schools that have special education integration program services to support them to play Special Olympics Unified badminton.
